Once-in-a-lifetime-night

MAN UTD 7 AS ROMA 1- Once in a lifetime night
after match review by Football Journalist wannabe JH

The scorebroad at Old Trafford shows the score.

It was a remarkable night to remember for all Red Devil's fans winning 7-1 while It is the saddest night of my(Totti) sporting career, said Roma captain Francesco Totti after his team's humiliating defeat at Manchester United on Tuesday night, it was like everything Man U touched seemed to turned into goal.

With 2-1 result on the 1st leg after AS Roma beat Man Utd in Rome, everyone will be expecting Man Utd to chase after Roma in the 2nd leg but few would expect the result turn out in this manner.

Man Utd was already four up against the italian masters of defence during half time with goals coming from Michael Carrick in the 11th mins, a shot from outside the box after collecting Ronaldo's square pass put it past Roma goalkeeper Doni who was left stunned on his feet. It was confidence rising goal for Man Utd. Which Sir Alex Ferguson said : 'The early goal gave us the confidence to go at Roma and that's absolutely the best night of European football we've had here. The scoreline tells you that.'

Second goal of the game came from the Yorkshireman was banishing 14 months of injury hell. He was also scoring his first United goal since November 2005 and his first in this competition since netting for Leeds against Deportivo La Coruna at the same stage six years ago. The home crowd was still celebrating when Carrick laid an exquisite pass to Rooney, who instantly flicked the ball onto Ryan Giggs. The Welshman's through ball was missed by Cristian Chivu after trying to flick the ball away and the ball landed to Smith who smashed the ball on the back of the net.

Roma were still reeling when the third happened as Ronaldo released Giggs, whose cross was flicked into the far corner by Rooney. Man U bag three goals in 9mins.

Fourth goal was a player who had never scored a goal in the competition but had predicted in a pre-match programme interview his time was coming, Cristiano Ronaldo.

And that, for the first half at least, was that.

The incredulous Roma contingent could not quite believe what had happened. Their supporters, who had not exactly enjoyed the most hospitable Manchester welcome, tried to make the best of it. But their misery was not complete.

Giggs' corner was half cleared but when Rooney ferried a pass back to the Welshman, he drilled a low cross to the far post where Ronaldo was waiting to bundle it home.

A sixth followed on the hour as Carrick collected Gabriel Heinze's pass and arrowed a shot into the top corner which was even better than his first effort.

Daniele de Rossi pulled one back for Roma but Evra soon cancelled it out to complete the rout. Roma coach Luciano Spalletti was left shell shocked after seeing his side dismantled.

Best United

Man U have a good midfield on this game. With Darren Fletcher being the unsung hero, working his heart out closing down every Roma's ball, he also silenced Totti throughout the match. All Fletcher did was sit in front of the defence, but he did a great job breaking up Roma's attacks and marking Totti completely out of the game.

Ronaldo was simply unstoppable, Christian Panucci said chasing Chirtiano Ronaldo was like chasing Valentino Rossi(MotoGP racer)'s bike.

Smith will be pleased at his performance, working his sock off in the match and took his goal well after a horror injury. He was like the first line of defence and his pressing unsettled Philippe Mexes and Christian Chivu.

The defence was much better compared to the 1st leg over at Rome. O'Shea look more settled then the 1st leg who was kept missing in action. Heinze look like a tiger making tackle keeping Roma quiet on the right side.

United boss Ferguson said: 'We never expected to win 7-1 but the quality of our game was so high.
'It was a fantastic performance. Our speed of play and penetration was superb.
'It was a special night and every one of our goals were quality.
'We did our job against a very good team.

What a night for Manchested United, a welcome addition to United's history!

Go Man U! Bring it on AC MILAN!
